6 Mental Health Tips for Researchers during COVID-19

Covid-19 is a unique global situation which is forcing people to stay at home. But enclosing ourselves also means that our researches have come to a stop. In a lockdown situation, you cannot work on finishing or publishing your work. But thanks to open access publication, you can now publish Ph.D thesis as book and improve your citation. But, there is no denial of the grave problem we are in. Frustration and anxiety are developing with quick pace. Moreover, the everyday myths and fake news on the media and internet are eating away the remaining self-confidence in human beings. Everyone is in panic; people don’t know what to do; it’s a rush situation where each day is bringing a new horror with it. People are losing jobs; household expenses are at stake while the virus is infecting several people each new day. When the doors to Nature and outside world are closed, slowly, anxiety, depression and other such psychic disorders are affecting people. Psychological problems are added reason of pain during a global pandemic so it is necessary to keep ourselves, mentally healthy.

To be healthy, we have to be in best mental fitness. Here are 6 great tips on how you can keep your mental health strong during COVID-19:

Eat Well– When health is wealth, you have to be mindful about your food. Consume a balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, detox drinks and proteins. Cook at home; it’s a great activity and gives a lot of pleasure to the body and brains, when you create flavors with your own skills. Avoid junk food and carbonated beverages.

Exercise Regularly– Especially cardio exercises are required for sweating. Those who sweat hard, lose the negative impulses generated in the brain. Working out produces good hormones for the body which keeps one in good mood. Exercises like running, cycling and swimming also give physical strength which makes you more confident.

Yoga and Meditation– Any form of exercise that can make you sweat is beneficial for mental wellness. But yoga helps you in keeping fit, but also allows you to focus. Same with mediation. It isn’t easy to meditate. It’s a habit that you need to develop little by little. Mindfulness helps you focus on something which is present in front of you and that deters negative thoughts which may enter your mind. This is especially helpful when you want to publish phd thesis as book. It is like brain-training and takes time, but perhaps the most effective way to stay happy.

Unite with Nature– Nature can be a great healer in pain; it can be our best friend in isolation. Uniting with Nature can be the best medicine at times, when you are restless, fearful or depressed. Fake news and panic about a pandemic can be deadly to your thoughts, so stay away from them. Instead, visit nature trails, go for camping (especially at rustic areas) and indulge in outdoor activities like biking, walking, jogging etc. If you have a special hobby like bird watching, gardening or pottery, do it now, to be with Nature; this can have a therapeutic effect on your mind.

Make a Daily Reading Habit – Another must to-do for researchers is to read. Scientific writing or any kind of writing requires that you keep reading. Reading everyday is a good habit especially when you have some extra time during a lockdown. It keeps you updated on recent topics in the field of scientific researches and academics which you can use to publish Ph. D thesis as book. Any type of reading is encouraged, be it newspaper, social post, blog or a magazine, reading is important for content development and vocabulary.

Be Kind to Others– We all are stuck up in a social scenario which is weird and unprecedented; fear and panic are natural reactions. But we have to take care of ourselves as well as others. Show some empathy. Do not discriminate. You may come across infected people, but don’t hurt them with your behavior. You have to understand that they are victims; they are suffering too. Be sensitive to patients with virus infection and behave sensibly.

Covid-19 is unique in its way as everything has stopped and definitely, for researchers and scientific workers, it’s a tough time to deal with. Your work is locked, your income is limited hence there are many things you need to worry about like research funding, survey work, earning, work-life balance and many more. But maintaining sanity is essential when you have to manage everything including expectations; when you have to be ready to publish Ph. D thesis as book, as soon as states are open. Being safe physically is important, but being safe mentally is even more required as you cope through the pandemic. Protect yourself from negativity and spread positivity.
