Step-by-step Guide to Getting Your Thesis published as a Book
Writing a scientific thesis is a daunting task, especially because of a few factors; the length is huge as well as the scope (it is easy to get dissuaded). Also, the author doesn’t know where to start and where to finish when it comes to a tedious task of organizing a thesis, and because the author or researcher has confusion as to where to place the thesis for publication.
After completing a thesis, fighting all the odds in your path, sacrificing your nights of sleep, you are now waiting for the day when it will present itself to the world. The best way to do it is by publishing it as an open-access book. You have to sort yourself and find out the best open access publishing medium which will be able to make your dream a success.
To get your thesis published follow the step by step guide which will assure your lifetime work is in best hands-
- Make a conscious decision: Make a conscious commitment of writing and finishing the research thesis. It is not easy to complete an elaborate thesis which is as lengthy as a book but much more complicated on the grounds of survey work, time and effort required on the scientist’s part. So, decide to achieve the completion of the work, attend to regular writing schedules for yourself. Fix a time table to organize yourself, your study and your research. Do your researches parallelly. If you are junior faculty, writing papers is fundamental to your profession and crucial to your promotion.
- Get in touch with a mentor: Before you begin, you need to make sure that you are heading in the right direction. Choose your subject, your field of research and consult it with a senior colleague or your Ph. D professor. You and your mentor should come to an agreement on the hypothesis, the data analysis, and the basic interpretations of your study. Your mentor can also guide you towards a suitable journal for publication of your prospective thesis.
- Finish with the first draft of your thesis: The first draft of the research is usually the biggest hurdle for an author. He sets his parameter too high and strict to which he finds difficult to meet up later on. Authors strive for eloquence too early in the process, but initially, it is important to get the main ideas of the research on the paper. Modifications can be done later. Make a rough outline of your work somewhere, in a diary or short notes and then find references to them.
After completing the thesis, the next step is to find a proper publisher.
- Make a list of your own: After hunting down, choose a list of names that can publish your thesis as open-access books, i.e. see if the open-access publishers are compatible to your field of work. Check their credibility and reviews and choose the right publisher. Check the references and bibliography to study the scope of the open-access publisher.
- Check the APC on open-access publisher website: APC (Article Processing Charge) is a nominal fee that open-access publishers charge, but it is a definite fee which is mostly declared on the website.
- Follow the submission guidelines of the open-access publisher: Every open access publishing platform has its own procedure. Read their submission guidelines thoroughly.
- Write a convincing cover letter: Find out the editor’s name and address of the open-access publisher you are choosing. In the first and the second paragraph of the cover letter state the name of your manuscript, including the names of the author/s, describe the reason behind your interest in the research work you have done, and the major findings from your research. Additionally, you can refer to prior work or the previous articles that you have published. In the next paragraph, address the aim and scope of the open-access publisher. Write how your work contributes to the aim of the open-access publisher and falls within the scope of their scientific coverage. Also mention why your work would be valuable for their readers. Finally, conclude the letter with statements that tell the editor that your manuscript is original and that no part of it is under consideration for publication elsewhere. A few open-access publishers also seek researchers to submit a list of the reviewers to whom your article can be sent for review. If the open-access publisher requests so, you should include the list in the concluding part of the letter.
- Follow a few rules: Review process can take some time. In the case of reviewed peer-reviewed journals, it may take up to 2-6 months, but open access publishing is speedy. They generally respond within a week’s time. But try to avoid simultaneous submissions, i.e. do not submit to multiple open-access publishers at the same time. Submit to another open-access publisher only when you have received a response from the first.
A researcher may or may not receive acceptance depending on the open-access publisher they are choosing for submission. However, being patient will get the thesis in the right hands. The publication world today is huge and it is important to publish your thesis properly, with authenticity and grace so that the world gets to read your hard work.
